Home Security Tips

You can never know when disaster is going to strike, leaving you fighting to keep your home and family safe from looters and other criminals who want what you have. While preparing for doomsday is important, you can’t forget to fortify your home using home security systems and other things to keep everyone safe inside. We’re going to give you some DIY tips on home security to keep your loved ones safe when it hits the fan.

Guard Your Finances

Protecting your financial assets is one of the most important aspects of home security. This is often overlooked because it doesn’t apply to physical home security, but its importance cannot be overstated. Even in the event of a doomsday situation, you’ll need strong financial security when the situation gets better and life returns to normal.

Be sure to invest in identity protection in security systems and save as much of your income as possible. If you’re looking at identity protection and can’t decide which service to use, the winner will depend on your financial needs. You’ll also want to get out of debt as much as possible, as an economic collapse will hurt you much worse if you’re racked with debt.

Reinforce Door and Window Frames

At face value, it may seem like adding locks to doors is enough to improve the security of a door. While it may buy you more time before someone gets in, all the locks in the world aren’t going to stop someone who’s determined to get into your home. Your best bet in fortifying your home is in reinforcing door and window frames.

FBI statistics show that over half of break-ins occur when the burglar forces their way into the home through the front, back, or garage doors. A couple of well-placed kicks can bring down a door in a flimsy frame, so be sure to invest in a strong metal frame for all exterior doors in your home.

Add Locks to Storage Areas

In a survival situation, people are going to be looting homes and businesses to obtain the items that they need for survival. In regards to potential intruders to your home, this reason for breaking in is no different. Potential intruders may wait until you and your family are away from the home before they break in to steal your provisions.

Don’t let all your time prepping go to waste. If an intruder were to break in, they would be able to take everything you’ve got and leave you without food or supplies. Add locks to storage areas such as freezers, cellars, and any other cabinets that contain critical survival tools.

Lighting Is A Deterrent

As life is now, most intruders break-in during the daytime in the workweek. This is because most people work during these hours, and homes without anyone inside are much easier to break into and rob. When doomsday hits, though, the typical 9-5 workday is going to be a thing of the past. We’re going to see a lot more people breaking in under the cover of darkness when those people-free time frames don’t exist anymore.

People are going to be breaking in under the cover of darkness in an attempt to not get caught and identified. Installing motion-sensitive lights in critical areas of your property will catch anyone who walks into their path at night. These lights are bright enough to wake you, giving you the time to fight off an intruder who may be trying to get in.

Get A Dog

Some preppers may be hesitant to get a dog because it seems like it would be just another mouth to feed in the event of an apocalypse. In truth, though, getting the right dog can provide you more benefits than harms. You’ll need to get a dog that’s ready to work, working breeds and herding breeds are a great place to look. These dogs have been bred for thousands of years to perform jobs, from hunting to herding, and everything in between.

You’ll want a dog that has a menacing bark, as the sound alone will be enough to deter most intruders. If you get an intelligent breed, they’ll be easy to train. With some minimal effort, you’ll have a well-trained dog that’s ready to defend the home if an intruder tries to make an entry.

Easily Accessible Weapons

It’s absolutely crucial that your firearms and other weapons be properly stored in a locked cabinet or safe. This doesn’t mean, however, that all weapons need to be in one location. If all your weapons are in one location, you may not be able to easily access them if you’re face to face with an intruder.

Consider having two or three strategic locations where firearms or other weapons will be kept. This way, you’ll be close to one no matter where you are in the house if an intruder breaks in.

You can collect all the supplies and provisions you want, but you won’t be truly prepared for doomsday until your home is safely fortified from intruders. Now that you’ve got some ideas on how to DIY your home security, you can rest assured that you and your family will be safe when doomsday hits.
